Up your dining experience at home in the Oak

In some busy households, meals are the only part of the day family members are together for an extended period of time.

With that in mind, the dining room needs to a place people want to be. Unlike some home designs where this space can be understated, in a new show home by Brookfield Residential, meal time is elevated.

The Oak is a 1,638-square-foot duplex that can have two to four bedrooms. It is presently demonstrated as a show home in the mixed-use southeast Calgary community of Seton.

The dining area is welcoming and bright. While many rooms of this kind are centrally located or at the back of the main level, this one is placed up front.

Measuring 10 feet two inches by 11 feet nine inches, the dining area has a transom window on a side wall, and larger windows overlooking the front yard.

The space is such that it can accommodate a larger table than one used daily short-term for hosting larger gatherings, such as holiday get-togethers.

Stairs to the second level are located just behind the dining area, leaving more square footage for areas that require mobility, such as the kitchen and great room.

The central kitchen keeps an entertainer’s interests in mind, as well. It’s L-shaped, giving two points of entry, supporting ease of circulation.

There’s an island with a sink and eating bar that seats at least three people. It’s easy to envision this area used for snacking and socializing as the host puts the finishing touches on the meal.

The stainless steel appliances are well-dispersed, providing plenty of elbow room if more than one is being accessed at the same time. Among the appliances in this show home is an elegant chimney-style hood fan in front of a full-height tile backsplash.

A focus on natural light extends to the great room, as well. This 17 foot one inch by 12 foot four inch sitting area has a long transom window on a side wall and both a rear-facing window and sliding glass doors that open to a deck. This format creates a natural transition for conversations with guests to head outdoors, when the weather allows for it.

The focal point of the great room is a stylish elongated fireplace surrounded in full-height tile.

The show home also presents this model’s ability to support a downstairs rental tenant. There is a side entrance, allowing this tenant immediate access to stairs that connect to the basement. This avoids the need to walk through the main floor to get to these stairs.

The optional basement orientation includes a bedroom, rec room, flex space and bathroom.

On the second level, a central bonus room creates a winged effect, with the master bedroom at the front and two secondary bedrooms side by side at the back. One of the secondary bedrooms has a walk-in closet.

The master bedroom reaches 11 foot 10 inches by 13 feet and has a spacious walk-in closet and ensuite. In the ensuite, there’s a large vanity beneath a full-width mirror and a well-sized shower with a glass door.

There is an option for the second floor to contain two master bedrooms. This fits a variety of living arrangements, such as an owner and rental tenant, or parent and adult child.
