Markets brimming with handcrafted artisan pieces have a way of luring in the curious shopper. They can be a place of fascination, where treasures are waiting to be found and stories are ready to be told.
Tangled Tree Markets is one such shopping adventure. Founded in 2015 by Calgary art teacher Kristine Thoreson, Tangled Tree Markets is a travelling shop widely known for its presence every year at the Bearspaw Christmas Market. Everything Tangled Tree offers is made locally and every event features a mix of talented artisans, which can include jewellers, textile artists, woodworkers, metalsmiths, landscape photographers, glass artists, clothing designers, bakers, chocolatiers and often, florists.

“Each artisan has taken the time to develop their own methods, recipes and processes. Many are self-taught and have spent years honing their craft, whether it’s woodworking or candle-making. Others are professional artists with degrees and full-time studios,” she says.

Tangled Tree Markets will be at the 2023 Calgary Fall Home Show, running Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park. The pop-up shop will feature 15 local artisans offering handcrafted accents for the home, like chunky knitted blankets, cutting boards, refinished antique and vintage furniture, wreaths, wood-block signs and hand-poured candles. Visitors can treat themselves to locally made chocolate, art cards, jewelry, skin oils, resin art and tie-dye jackets.
“The shop will be set up like a boutique. Shoppers can browse the shelves and tables and chat with the different artisans who will be on hand each day,” Thoreson says. “Everything is quality made by someone who lives and works in and around Calgary. It’s about that one-of-a-kind piece, or that little something for yourself. That unique gift that you just love and want to take home.”
Sundarata Naturals, Sweet Bella Chocolates, Dragonfly Designs and Farmhouse Charm Candles are just a few of the vendors. Many of them will take custom orders.
“From larger-scale woodwork projects like kitchen tables or smaller ones like the perfect cutting board, custom pet beds or a piece of jewelry, there will be a lot of opportunity to get great handcrafted pieces,” she says. “The artisans whose work will fill my shop at the home show really feel like they have something great to offer Calgarians. The pop-up shop is a great place to take a break from renovation and building research and to shop for some beautifully made items.”
